Torino and Piemonte in the limelight

Italian cinema has deep roots in Piemonte, with Torino becoming its first capital in 1896, when the Lumière brothers set up the first screening in the city, and the first ever in Italy. It was 1914 when Giovanni Pastrone shot Cabiria, the first Italian silent film and the first blockbuster in the history of movie. The first soundstages and cinemas were built here; this city has launched internationally renowned producers. Torino is a unique urban set, that recounts important chapters in the history of cinema with the many locations scattered throughout its various neighbourhood. Today Torino promotes and hosts prestigious festivals for spectators of all ages, such as the TFF Torino Film Festival, Torino LGBTQ, CinemAmbiente and Sottodiciotto FilmFestival, as well as the multimedia ViewFest. The temple of the seventh art is the Mole Antonelliana, home to the National Cinema Museum with an extraordinary collection of 1,800,000 works, including films, archival documents, photographs, apparatus and art objects, posters and memorabilia. But the protagonist of the big screen is also the entire region, playing an increasingly central role in Italian and international film and television productions. From Lake Maggiore to Lake Orta, the hills of Langhe Roero and Monferrato to the UNESCO Royal Residences, Piemonte is an appealing destination for film tourism, but also a source of ideas and talents, as we see by the Film Commission Torino Piemonte, one of the country's most active and creative. Among the cornerstones of the movie system made in Piemonte, Film Commission Torino Piemonte is one of the most dynamic and creative Italian foundation, which aims to promote Piemonte’s cultural heritage as a perfect set for Italian and international film as well as for audiovisual productions. In 2020 the long-lasting relation between Torino and the big screen will be the focus of "Torino Città del Cinema 2020" (Torino City of Cinema), a year of celebrations that will bring exhibitions, festivals and many initiatives to Piemonte’s main city.
